Our bodies naturally produce superoxide dismutase (SOD), but the numerous challenges of modern life overwhelm its capacity. Supplementing with SOD is not merely an added benefit, but rather a necessary reinforcement for the body. The choice of SOD supplement, however, determines the efficiency and safety of this reinforcement.

Before discussing "what to supplement," we must first understand "why we need to supplement." This is not only about beauty, but also about the fundamental principles of health.

Why is it necessary to supplement with superoxide dismutase (SOD)?

The human body does indeed have its own "SOD production line," but with age and changes in lifestyle, the "supply-demand balance" of SOD gradually breaks down, leading to an excess of free radicals, damaging bodily functions and accelerating the aging process.

1.Aging:  The body's own SOD "production decreases," and its scavenging capacity becomes limited.

Age 25 is a critical point: Before age 25, the body's rate of SOD synthesis can easily "keep up" with the rate of free radical production; however, after age 25, SOD synthesis decreases at a rate of 1%-2% per year. By age 40, the body's own SOD activity is only 50% of its peak level, and after age 60, it is less than 30%.

Meanwhile, the production of free radicals does not decrease—cell metabolism and respiration continuously produce superoxide anion free radicals. This leads to insufficient SOD, and the excess free radicals begin to attack cells: damaging skin collagen (causing wrinkles), damaging vascular endothelium (accelerating vascular aging), and oxidizing liver cells (increasing metabolic burden). This is one of the core reasons for "aging."

2.Modern Life: Excess Free Radicals, Insufficient Endogenous SOD

Besides age, daily lifestyle habits also accelerate the production of free radicals:

UV exposure: Sun exposure for one hour a day increases the free radicals produced by the skin by three times, far exceeding the body's own SOD (superoxide dismutase) clearing capacity;

Late nights and stress: When sleep-deprived or under stress, the body secretes "stress hormones," stimulating the production of a large number of free radicals;

Poor diet: High-sugar, high-fat, and fried foods produce advanced glycation end products during metabolism, accompanied by a large number of free radicals;

Environmental pollution: Harmful substances in smog, car exhaust, and secondhand smoke, after entering the human body, trigger "oxidative stress," leading to a proliferation of free radicals;

Disease impact: Pathological conditions caused by illness and the process of drug metabolism both exacerbate oxidative stress in the body, becoming important drivers of the abnormal proliferation of free radicals.

3.The body's own SOD has "limited capacity" and cannot cope with "concentrated attacks."

Even in young people with healthy lifestyles, the body's own SOD has its limitations: it is mainly concentrated inside cells and provides insufficient coverage against free radicals in the blood and on the skin surface; moreover, its activity is not high enough to effectively eliminate free radicals during "concentrated bursts" (such as after sun exposure or strenuous exercise).

This is where supplementing with SOD becomes necessary—it's like adding "highly efficient cleaners" to the body to help quickly remove excess free radicals and prevent continuous cell damage.
